IAD vs. DCA: which airport suits a business trip?

Dulles and Reagan National serve the same city very differently. The better choice depends on where the meetings are and where the flight is going.

The short version

Reagan National (DCA) is the airport nearest downtown Washington, in Arlington, and is usually the convenient choice for meetings in the District, Arlington and Alexandria. Washington Dulles (IAD) is farther out in Loudoun and Fairfax counties and is the region’s main international gateway. If your destination is overseas, or your meetings are in Tysons, Reston or the Dulles corridor, IAD is often the better fit.

Location and the meetings you have

Start from the address of the meeting, not the airport name. DCA is close to the Pentagon, Crystal City, Alexandria and the District, so many same-day trips start and end there. IAD sits beside Reston, Herndon, Sterling and Chantilly, which makes it the natural airport for the technology and business belt west of the city.

The two airports also reach the rest of the region by different roads. DCA is served by the GW Parkway and the Beltway; IAD by the Dulles Toll Road and its connecting roads. Time of day matters more than distance on either.

Where the flight is going

DCA is subject to a perimeter rule that limits most non-stop service to destinations within a certain distance of the airport, with exceptions, so long-haul and international choices are generally concentrated at IAD. Check your airline’s schedule rather than relying on a general rule, as routes change.

International arrivals also bring immigration and customs time, which should be built into any pickup plan whichever airport you use.

Getting to and from the airport

Both airports have Metro service, which can be quick for a solo traveller with light luggage. For a traveller with luggage, a tight schedule or a late arrival, a chauffeured transfer removes the transfers and the walking, and the pickup point is agreed in advance.

Airports control where ground transportation may stop, so a good operator confirms the meeting point for your date and airport.

A practical way to decide

Compare the whole journey, not just the flight: the time from the meeting to the airport at the hour you will travel, the airline’s options from each airport, and the meeting point on arrival. If you are still undecided, give us your addresses and flight options and we will describe what we know about the run from each.
